Help us stop the overexploitation of endangered sharks in the global shark fin trade

An upcoming vote in November amongst over 180 nations could
protect endangered sharks from being commercially finned.
Can you add your name to our letter urging
world leaders to end this gruesome practice?

Twin Ocean Research Foundation is so excited to be assisting in this very important proposal to amend Panama’s shark finning law

This proposed bill is being lobbied in the Senate by Congressman Juan Diego Vasquez
to amend Panama’s shark finning law.
This bill aims to fill the legal gaps that continue to allow the practice of
shark finning in Panamanian waters, and to extend the shark finning prohibition
to Panamanian-flagged fishing ships in the high seas
and other areas beyond national jurisdiction

WHAT WE DO

Twin Oceans Research is focused on understanding the scope of and exploring solutions to the growing problem of shark overfishing and its impact on scalloped hammerhead sharks in The Republic of Panama.

In Panama, despite the ecological and commercial importance of sharks, there is a significant lack of knowledge regarding basic fishing data and the life history of sharks.

By conducting a broader survey of published literature on scalloped hammerhead sharks, exploring the migration connectivity between Panama, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Colombia to learn what is known about their population abundance, migratory patterns, and nursery habitats we will be able to identify information gaps to be addressed.

WHY WE DO IT

About

Sharks and Rays are exceptionally susceptible to overfishing because they tend to reach maturity slowly and produce only a few offspring at a time after long gestation periods.

77% of oceanic shark and ray species now qualify as threatened with extinction under the Red List criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) is listed as Critically Endangered, the highest threat category on the IUCN Red List.

With the threat level high, it is imperative that we find solutions.

- When purchasing local ceviche you should make sure it is Ceviche de Corvina not Ceviche de Pescado. It is a high probability that it is juvenile hammerhead shark meat.

When ordering fish tacos or fish empanadas ask what type of fish is in the product.
